Please Pray for Northern Illinois

Hi folks,

As you may know, a massive shooting occurred yesterday at Northern Illinois University, on par with the tragedy that happened here less than a year ago.  Please pray for the students, staff and faculty, and anyone else involved or affected by this horrible incident.  There is power in our prayer, because God hears and honors his children’s prayers, and we are able to weep with NIU.  We are praying for you all!

updated news on the incident can be found here:

6 The calm before the storm

Prayer blog

Today is a quiet day in the life of vtONE. Almost all the preparations for tomorrow night are done. We’re taking a few minutes to come up and breathe. Please pray today that our campus would be united for God’s glory.

For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ.
1 Corinthians 12:12

Today: Uniting His kingdom on this campus for His glory.

5 Team

Prayer blog

The worship event is almost here. That’s a statement that makes me both excited and nervous. I’m excited because I’ve seen how God has worked in powerful ways through past events. I’m excited because of the message that you’ll be hearing Saturday night. I’m excited because there’s more big stuff on the horizon. But there’s still a lot to be done between now and Saturday–loose ends to be tied up.

Tonight, the event team and many of the people who are going to be participating in making this event happen will be meeting together. We have a little bit of business still to cover, but most of our time together will be praying for the event. And praying for you.

The days just before the event are challenging days for the vtONE team. It’s a time that Satan loves to show up and attack us. Please pray for us, especially that we would stand strong and not let Satan grasp an inch of us. Pray that things would come together, and most importantly, that Saturday night would be 100% about God and His kingdom and 0% about us.

Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.
Hebrews 12:1-2

Today: Strength for the team

4 The fields are ready for the harvest

Prayer blog

Look around you! Vast fields are ripening all around us and are ready now for the harvest. 36The harvesters are paid good wages, and the fruit they harvest is people brought to eternal life.
John 4:35b-36a (NLT)

People on our campus are interested in spiritual things. I’m constantly overhearing bits of spiritual conversations when I walk around campus. There are so many people here who would enter into God’s kingdom if only we’d show them what the kingdom has to offer.

He said to his disciples, “The harvest is so great, but the workers are so few. 38So pray to the Lord who is in charge of the harvest; ask him to send out more workers for his fields.”
Matthew 9:37-38 (NLT)

Pray today that you would be aware of the ripe fields around you. Pray specifically that your time at Virginia Tech would produce a harvest. And pray that the people who enter the kingdom through the harvest would in turn go back to the fields and bring more people into the kingdom.

Today: The harvest is ready

3 Be God’s light

Prayer blog

Here’s another way to put it: You’re here to be light, bringing out the God-colors in the world. God is not a secret to be kept. We’re going public with this, as public as a city on a hill. If I make you light-bearers, you don’t think I’m going to hide you under a bucket, do you? I’m putting you on a light stand. Now that I’ve put you there on a hilltop, on a light stand—shine! Keep open house; be generous with your lives. By opening up to others, you’ll prompt people to open up with God, this generous Father in heaven.
Matthew 5:14-16 (The Message)

Today, think about the people already in your life who are outside of God’s kingdom. Pick a specific person that you know. Maybe it’s the guy who sits in front of you in half your classes. Maybe it’s the girl who lives next door. Got someone? Are you being God’s light to them? Pray for two things today. First, pray that your friend would come to know Christ. Second, pray about how you can bring more of God’s light to their lives. Then go and be that light.

I know that if you keep praying this prayer for your friend, you’ll see God do some amazing things in their life. You probably won’t see a huge answer after praying this prayer once, but this prayer is an awesome prayer to continually pray over months for a specific person.

Today: Bring God’s light

P.S. We’d love it if you post a comment telling us how you’ve seen big results from continued prayer for a specific person.

2 Pray for a campus aligned with God’s heart

Prayer blog

if my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.
2 Chronicles 7:14

Today, our focus is on campus-wide repentance. Yesterday, we focused on getting ourselves right with God. Today, we’re going to pray for campus wide repentance. Our campus is a broken place. What makes that worse is that as the body of Christ, we’ve been part of the problem. Some of our actions have caused people to move farther away from God. That’s not the way things are supposed to be. As kingdom citizens, we must live lives that show the reign of God and repent of our ways that are not in line with God’s will.

Today, pray for repentance on our campus. Pray that we’d be more concerned about being faithful to the will of God than being faithful to the will of people. Pray that we’d learn more and more each day how to live bold kingdom-minded lives. Pray that God’s kingdom would become so present on our campus that people would be drawn from the system of the world into the kingdom of God. Ask that God would make our campus right with Him.

God can do anything, you know—far more than you could ever imagine or guess or request in your wildest dreams! He does it not by pushing us around but by working within us, his Spirit deeply and gently within us.
Ephesians 3:20 (The Message)

Today: Pray for a campus aligned with God’s heart.

1 Getting on the right page

Prayer blog

Now that we’re a month into the fall semester, things are moving full speed. For me, full speed often means that my priorities get out of whack. Maybe your quiet times only come when you feel you can’t study chemistry any longer. Maybe your dialog with God is lacking. Maybe you haven’t shown God’s love to the people around you through your actions. Maybe you’ve slipped back into that old sin that you thought you had dealt with.

Before we can come together as a campus and truly worship God, we must first be right with him. Today, focus on getting your priorities right. Confess that you have done what wasn’t important and not done what was important. Tell God where you’ve messed up, and ask for the strength to do better. If you’ve sinned against someone, get in contact with them and ask for their forgiveness. Remember, you can sin by doing something and also by not doing something.

confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.
James 5:16b

He [Jesus] must increase, but I must decrease.
John 3:30

Today: Get yourself right with God

Upcoming worship event and prayer blog

Worship

It’s under a week until the next worship event (September 23, not September 7, like some of the info cards had by mistake). This week, we’d like to ask all of you to pray for several things to get us ready to worship together. Check back each day this week for a new post that will guide you in praying for the worship event. Today’s prayer blog will be posted shortly.

Prayer journal

Prayer journalingDuring the prayer event, we had a journal by the chapel entrance where people could write down prayers, ways that God had answered their prayers, or whatever was on their hearts. Looking through the journal was awesome, and we want to share that experience with you.

Prayer stations and recap

Prayer stationPraying with you all was awesome today. Thanks for dedicating an entire day to making God’s name known on this campus. We’re encouraged and excited from what we’ve already seen happen as a result of our prayers. We’ll be posting some more updates here during the next few days.

By popular request, here are the prayer stations from the prayer event.

If you have something to share about your experience during the prayer event or you wanted to write in the journal but didn’t get a chance, please click the link below to add a comment to this post and let us know what’s on your heart.

And my people, my God-defined people, respond by humbling themselves, praying, seeking my presence, and turning their backs on their wicked lives, I’ll be there ready for you: I’ll listen from heaven, forgive their sins, and restore their land to health. (2 Chronicles 7:14 MSG)

Amen!
